Adelaide radio station 5AA has revealed 'explosive' emails in which an influential South Australian government MP is asking for prayers to defeat the South Australian Voluntary Euthanasia Bill 2016 due to be debated this Thursday.
The MP, Tom Kenyon, holds the powerful position of government whip, meaning he is the chief organiser and enforcer of government voting.
“This is literally a matter of life and death,” Mr Kenyon told 5AA Breakfast in an interview this morning. “We’re talking about whether the state will become involved in the killing of its citizens or not. As Christians, our calling is to follow the example of Christ, and at no point did Christ ever kill anyone.
"Every time he encountered someone who was sick he healed them, he even brought people back from the dead. That’s what we believe. As Christians we can’t support euthanasia."
This is a clear example of a minority held religious view seeking to derail the public will in an important area of law reform. You can hear Mr Kenyon's interview here.
