2026 State of VAD Report
Go Gentle Australia launched the 2026 State of Voluntary Assisted Dying Report at Parliament House on 31 March 2026.
The report gives an updated snapshot of how voluntary assisted dying (VAD) is operating across Australia and New Zealand. It collates publicly available data from independent oversight bodies for the 2024–25 reporting year and draws on data from our own 2025 Australian Voluntary Assisted Dying Survey as well as wider feedback from dying people, their families and health professionals. As with the inaugural report, it reflects an imperfect but improving data set, shaped by differing legislative and reporting requirements between jurisdictions.
The report’s purpose is to examine and evaluate VAD: who accesses it, how services are delivered, where individuals fall out of the process, and whether safeguards and access remain in balance.
